Lucy Perry
2021 Graduate
Hey! My name is Lucy Perry and I’m about to finish up my four years here at Roanoke. I was a member of the women’s soccer team here and I’m a huge fan of the English Premier League club, Liverpool. I love to be outside, specifically being outside pushing some physical limits. Some of these activities include trail running, backpacking, and whitewater paddleboarding. Right after graduation, I’m leaving to start my journey hiking the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. After I hopefully complete this, I plan to move out West and start my next journey of figuring out what Environmental Science related career I want to follow—while continuing to go on new and compelling adventures!
Nora Terrill
Student Researcher 2022
Hi! My name is Nora Terrill and I am a sophomore here at Roanoke College. I am pursuing a major in environmental studies and a concentration in business management. I’m interested in researching biodiversity in the soil or water. My favorite lab I’ve ever done is studying benthic macroinvertabrates as an indication of stream health. Outside of research, I ride horses competitively and I am very active in my service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega!
Emma Land
Student Researcher 2021
My research is focused on understanding the relationship between areas of groundwater discharge and the biodiversity and population of benthic macroinvertebrates. I am interested in all things conservation science and believe understanding crucial aspects within local ecosystems is important. Indicator species like benthic macroinvertebrates help us get to know the environment around us on a microscopic level.
Talia Cartafalsa
Student Researcher 2022
My name is Talia Cartafalsa, I am a sophomore, and I am an environmental studies and chemistry double major. This semester, I’ll begin working on improving methods related to initial data collection for the wetland restoration on Elizabeth Campus. I absolutely love spending time outdoors, and I am especially interested in the intersections between chemistry and the environment. My hope is to develop this research into an Honors Distinction Project and to eventually present at a conference!
Britt Belcher
Summer Scholar 2021
Britt Belcher is a senior at Roanoke College who is a double major in Environmental Studies and Sociology with a concertation in Peace and Justice Studies. Britt has a passion for the environment that is not only limited to their academic studies but extends to their personal life as Britt seeks to limit their impact on the environment by incorporating a low-waste, vegan. When Britt is not in a class, doing homework, or working, they enjoy spending time with her two cats, Beans and Hinami, going for runs, and playing animal crossing.
Shane Saunders
Student Reseacher 2022
Shane is studying the effects of industrial outfall and locations along the Roanoke River in Salem, VA. He is interested in field research in forest and river environments and research methods.
